EFAD endorses the inclusion of whole grain in front-of-pack nutrition labelling

EFAD has endorsed an open letter to the European Commission to ensure that whole grains are included into any Front-of-Pack Nutrition Labelling (FOPNL) to be proposed.

The letter from Whole Grain Initiative says: "FOPNL encourages individuals to make informed dietary choices by providing simplified information on the key nutritional characteristics of food products based on scientific criteria.

"It is important that there is greater alignment between FOPNL systems and evidence-based dietary guidelines, as well as national health and nutrition policies to truly empower people in identifying healthier options.

"Notably, whole grains are often included in food-based dietary guidelines but often excluded from FOPNL.

"There is consistent evidence that regular consumption of whole grains (around three servings per day) is associated with a lower risk of developing noncommunicable diseases, such as cardiovascular disease, obesity, type 2 diabetes and certain cancers."

The letter has been endorsed by more than 30 MEPs and organizations across Europe.

PROMISS project for healthy ageing draws to a close

With the European population growing older, there is a challenge to keep an increasing number of seniors across all European countries healthy and active. In Europe, between a fifth and a half of all older adults living at home are malnourished or at risk of protein energy malnutrition.

PROMISS was created to better understand and ultimately prevent protein energy malnutrition in seniors - and contribute to improve active and healthy ageing.

The PROMISS project has been reviewed and considered complete, as all the objectives were fully achieved. The scientific results of the project highlight the importance of an optimal protein intake for the prevention of malnutrition and the maintenance of physical functioning during the aging process, especially in old age.

The final reviewers of the project said: "PROMISS is a flagship of European cooperation, an excellent example for transfer of evidence-based scientific research into practice and having positively impacted older persons’ health in Europe."

All the developed materials and reports will be available on the PROMISS website for five years. A recipe booklet can be downloaded from the EFAD website.

EFAD has been a proud partner of PROMISS since 2016.

Older Adults’ Understanding of Nutrition

Involving the patient in their own treatment to meet nutritional needs and encourage self-management is an interesting approach; however, studies are limited in this area, especially for hospitalized older patients.

With the introduction of digital services, new technology has become available that can be of advantage to patients with regard to nutritional self-management.
