Analysing professionals' perceptions of processed foods

Acknowledging the need for interdisciplinary dialogue between stakeholders, and following the Processed Foods Symposium in 2020, the European Food Information Council (EUFIC) hosted a Stakeholder Workshop on Processed Foods in February 2021. Teresa Rodrigues from EFAD European Specialist Dietetic Network (ESDN) Public Health participated, along with 26 other stakeholders from the fields of nutrition, food technology, policy making, industry and civil society.

This workshop was conceived as a research study, which was published in the peer-reviewed scientific journal Frontiers in Nutrition “Even we are confused”: A thematic analysis of professionals' perceptions of processed foods and challenges for communication”.

EUFIC has now published a press release highlighting the need for greater interdisciplinary collaboration to seek consensus on the scope of processing, the degree of processing, and the aspects used to assess the wholesomeness of processed food.

Cannabidiol novel food evaluations on hold pending new data

European Food Safety Authority scientists cannot currently establish the safety of cannabidiol (CBD) as a novel food due to data gaps and uncertainties about potential hazards related to CBD intake.

The European Commission has determined that cannabidiol (CBD) can be considered as a novel food (NF), and currently, 19 applications are under assessment at EFSA. While assessing these, it has become clear that there are knowledge gaps that need to be addressed before a conclusion on the safety of CBD can be reached.

FrieslandCampina Institute webinar - Combating nutrition misinformation: a continuous challenge
22 September

Consumers are exposed to a plethora of information on nutrition via the Internet, television shows, friends, influencers and books, to name a few. Without formal nutritional education it is not always easy to distinguish facts from misinformation.

How can you, as a nutrition and health professional, educate your clients/patients on what information to believe? How can you still provide impactful advice to clients/patients when they are convinced fake information is true? How can you portray yourself as a credible source of information?

One of the world’s top sports nutritionists and exercise physiologists, Professor Asker Jeukendrup, will explore these questions.

WHO Europe publishes report on minimum pricing for alcohol

The WHO European Region has some of the highest levels of alcohol consumption and corresponding rates of alcohol-related harm in the world. Pricing policies and taxation are among the most effective measures that policy-makers can use to address these harms, but they remain underutilized across the Region.

There has been growing interest in recent years in a relatively new form of pricing policy to decrease alcohol affordability and consequently consumption – minimum pricing. This report discusses this (as yet) not widely used policy and its potential for improving public health and examines how minimum pricing policies should be applied alongside alcohol taxation measures.

ENDietS spotlight

An update on what the European Network of Dietetic Students (ENDietS) committee has been working on.

In the past few months, ENDietS has been focusing on building a fundamental National Key Contacts (NKC) network around Europe, that will strengthen the bonds between the European students, their Higher Education Institutions, EFAD and ENDietS. Five new National Key Contacts have recently joined the ENDietS team and brought new ideas and their fresh energy in the NKC General Meeting that was held in May.

ENDietS Joint President Marianna Kalliostra travelled to Antwerp, Belgium for the Thomas More International Days and delivered an in-person presentation to students and international guests, joined online by EFAD Executive Committee member, Daniel Bucholz. Marianna also gave an online presentation at VIVES University, Belgium.

ENDietS is also a partner of the Thematic Network “Integrated Nutrition Cancer Care” consortium, led by the European Nutrition Health Alliance. We proudly endorse the Joint-Statement on the essential role of integrated nutrition care throughout the cancer care continuum as part of patient-centered care, that was presented at the EU Health Policy Platform annual meeting, on 5 May.

As the academic year is coming to its end, two new motivated and enthusiastic Presidents, will be soon taking the lead from current ENDietS Joint Presidents Marianna Kalliostra (Greece) and Stella Miric (Croatia). Reflecting on their time in role, they said:

"It has been an absolute honour to have been leading ENDietS for the past four years. ENDietS represents the European Nutrition and Dietetic Students and we have met many of them throughout the years. They, and we all, have something in common; We share the same passion for nutrition science and profession and the same sparkle when connecting with people with common interests.

"Even though COVID restrained us from meeting in person in the past two years, that did not stop us from delivering the vision we set in Berlin, 2019. We aimed to make a difference. And here we are, almost ready to hand over the baton to our two new successors that will continue the work that started in 2014, feeling fulfilled that we have achieved our goal and that we have set the base for great things to come.

"We are grateful for what the ENDietS journey has offered us, and we will always be a part of the ENDietS family. #bettertogether"

The International Whole Grain Day is a whole-day celebration aimed at getting to know more about whole grains and discovering how good they are for our health and planetary well-being.

On 9 November, the virtual policy roundtable will bring together high-level speakers, including policymakers, academics, healthcare professionals and patient representatives to discuss whole grains as a key component of healthy and sustainable diets, and how policy initiatives, underpinned by rigorous science, can help to increase the alarmingly low levels of whole grain intake in Europe. The webinar on 16 November will celebrate the third edition of the International Whole Grain Day. Register here.

Among the speakers will be Manuel Moñino, Lead of EFAD's ESDN for Public Health.
