World Health Day - "My Health, My Right"

Every year on April 7, we celebrate the World Health Day. The World Health Day 2024 theme from the World Health Organization is "My health, my right".

This year’s theme was chosen to champion the right of everyone, everywhere to have access to quality health services, education, and information, as well as safe drinking water, clean air, good nutrition, quality housing, decent working and environmental conditions, and freedom from discrimination.

In alignment with this theme, EFAD reaffirms its commitment to advocating for the Human Right to Safe and Appropriate Nutritional Care for Every European Citizen. As an organization representing dietitians from 27 European Member States, EFAD stands united in its belief that everyone deserves access to safe and appropriate nutritional care.

The EFAD Budapest Resolution, issued in October 2022, further solidifies this stance, emphasizing the essential role of dietitians in supporting all European citizens in practising this right.

Abstracts from the 14th EFAD Congress published in the Annals of Nutrition & Metabolism

The abstract journal from the 14th EFAD Congress is out now! Held under the theme "Dietetic care, a human right: moving forward into a new era" in Budapest last October, this event delved into the future of dietetic care and its fundamental importance as a human right.

Dive into cutting-edge research, innovative practices, and discussions featured in the Annals of Nutrition and Metabolism Journal.

ENHA calls for Health Equity in the EU

The European Nutrition for Health Alliance (ENHA) launched its Manifesto for Health Equity in the European Union (EU). This manifesto addresses the critical issue of health disparities and malnutrition across EU Member States and outlines key recommendations to prioritize patient-centered care, integrate nutritional support within healthcare systems, and combat malnutrition effectively.

EFAD proudly supports and endorses the Manifesto which calls upon the upcoming EU mandate (2024-2029) to develop a comprehensive strategy on nutritional care that builds upon the EFAD Budapest Resolution & Vienna Declaration, on nutritional care as a human right.

Knowledge of Dietitians on Gut Microbiota in Health - The Outcomes of an EFAD Online Survey

The outcomes of this online survey, recently published in Nutrients and conducted by EFAD Project Officer, Evdokia Mitsou, ESDN Gastroenterology Lead Christina Katsagoni, and EFAD Project Manager Katarzyna Janiszewska, shed some light on the current knowledge of dietitians across Europe.

The survey delves into the perceived and existing knowledge of European dietitians regarding gut microbiota and its impact on systemic health, the influence of nutrition on the gut ecosystem, and the roles of probiotics and prebiotics.

By identifying potential gaps, it highlights areas where future educational initiatives can significantly contribute to the exploration of this relatively uncharted territory.

Based on these insights, the EFAD Learning Course "Health through Gut" was crafted to address these identified gaps. If you are yet to obtain your certificate, you can do so by visiting the EFAD Learning platform.

GLIM for the diagnosis of malnutrition - a framework for consistent dietetic practice

Identifying and treating malnutrition is an interdisciplinary team effort.
For the nutrition and dietetics profession, GLIM offers a great opportunity for moving both the scientific and clinical knowledge of malnutrition management forward.

However, while the GLIM framework has been extensively studied since its launch, various knowledge gaps remain. For the nutrition and dietetics profession, these knowledge gaps mainly relate to the GLIM implementation process, the role of GLIM concerning the nutrition care process, and treatment strategies for various nutrition-related conditions.

The recently published opinion paper entitled Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM) for the Diagnosis of Malnutrition - a Framework for Consistent Dietetic Practice - ScienceDirect, aims to describe the rationale for implementing the GLIM framework in clinical dietetic practice and propose a research agenda based on knowledge gaps from a dietetic point of view. The paper is now available online in Clinical Nutrition ESPEN, with great contributions from EFAD Members, Elisabet Rothenberg, Amalia Tsagari, Nicole Erickson, Christina N. Katsagoni, Darija Vranesic Bender, and Harriët Jager-Wittenaar.
