EFAD Congress abstract submission is open

EFAD Congress: A five-day journey through European Dietetics

EFAD Congress 2021 is welcoming abstracts for oral and poster presentation. We will hold interactive e-poster sessions to maximise the opportunity for delegates to present their work and research projects. 

The Scientific Programme Committee will peer-review all abstracts and consider the quality of the abstract in terms of its relevance to the congress theme, research quality, and originality. Accepted abstracts will be published in the Annals of Nutrition and Metabolism.

Don't delay, the deadline for receipt of abstracts is 15 July.

Roundtable on Sustainability and Agriculture Report

This roundtable, in partnership with The European Foundation for Dietetics and Nutrition (EuFoDiN), posed questions about how we can equip dietitians to meaningfully engage and contribute to the fields of sustainability and agriculture, ultimately promoting health and wellbeing in Europe.

WATCH: Meet the winners of the EFAD - PROMISS High-Protein Meal Competition

This competition was organised by EFAD for the PROMISS dissemination work package and was supported by the European Network of Dietetic Students (ENDietS).

The three winning recipes were:

  • in line with PROMISS findings
  • sustainable
  • adapted to older adults' cost
  • made with ingredients available throughout Europe
  • easily cooked by older adults

Congratulations to our winners:

Spotlight: ESDN for Older Adults Committee

An update on what the ESDN for Older Adults Committee has been working on.

Collaboration with European Ageing Network


The European Ageing Network (EAN) has published its guidelines for promoting well-nutrition in older adults care settings. The report is designed to help managers of care organisations across Europe shape the nutritional journey in order to keep their service users healthy and happy for as long as possible.

The mission of the taskforce, composed of EAN members and EFAD representatives from both ESDN Older Adults and ESDN Food Service, was to draft practical guidelines based on literature and practice. Find out more here.

Committee member wins Unsung Hero Clinical Award for work during COVID-19


Dietitian and ESDN Older Adults committee member Elizabeth Archer has won the Nottingham Healthcare NHS Trust OSCAR Unsung Hero ‘Outstanding Clinical Practice’ 2020/21 award.

She improved dietary input for inpatients diagnosed with COVID-19 and helped in optimising their recovery. She educated colleagues about the importance of protein in optimising recovery and ensured patients were proactively offered protein supplements. Her work will be presented at the upcoming EFAD conference. Congratulations Elizabeth!

Article spotlight - "Position of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics: Malnutrition (Undernutrition) Screening Tools for All Adults"

Malnutrition (undernutrition) screening is a simple process intended to quickly recognise individuals who may have a malnutrition diagnosis. While numerous malnutrition screening tools are in use, their levels of validity, agreement, reliability, and generalisability vary.

The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics reviewed the body of evidence supporting malnutrition screening tools and determined a single tool for identifying adults in all settings who may have malnutrition, regardless of their age or medical history.

Sodium Country Score Card launched

The Sodium Country Score Card was established as part of WHO’s efforts to reduce dietary sodium intake. It will track each country's performance on a continuous basis and will continue to be enhanced with additional features including population sodium intake.

Webinar - "COVID-19 recovery: Why investments in nutrition cannot wait"

Watch back this webinar which discussed how leaders, policymakers, and advocates can work to ensure that nutrition is an essential part of COVID-19 recovery plans.

Speakers shared data on the size of the crisis and potential solutions at global and country levels, such as scaling up micronutrient supplements and community-based interventions.

New manifesto: From Seed to Spoon

Survey: Help to STOP childhood obesity

Share your views on childhood obesity in the EU in a survey organised by the EU-funded STOP (Science and Technology in childhood Obesity Policy) project. Answers will help improve the understanding of the challenges of childhood obesity and your input will help shape recommendations for EU-level policy.

UN Nutrition priority actions proposed

The UN Decade of Action on Nutrition 2016-2025 is a commitment by United Nations Member States to undertake 10 years of sustained and coherent implementation of policies, programmes and increased investments to eliminate malnutrition in all its forms, everywhere, leaving no one behind.

Latest additions to the NOURISHING database

All nutrition and diet-related policies from the Netherlands, Portugal and Poland have now been added to the NOURISHING database, including several national awareness campaigns and a recently implemented sugar sweetened beverage (SSB) tax. View the NOURISHING and MOVING databases here.
