Policy Advocacy For Combating Malnutrition in Women and Girls

Pandemic lockdowns and containment measures have created four compounding crises that continue to adversely impact women and girls’ nutrition. These are increased poverty, increased food insecurity, reduced access to health services, and extensive school closures.

Standing Together for Nutrition (ST4N) has released a policy brief entitled, COVID-19 and Malnutrition: A Toxic Combination for Women and Girls on the ways COVID-19 is disproportionately exacerbating nutrition challenges faced by women and girls around the world. This policy brief calls for COVID-19 response and recovery efforts to be explicitly gender-responsive in their design, scope, and delivery.

WHO Europe: Foods for infants and young children - a matter of concern?

World Breastfeeding Week also sparks discussions across the WHO European Region around the growing international concern about infant feeding. Many commercial food products are marketed as suitable for babies from 4 months of age, potentially displacing breast milk intake. WHO recommends that babies are exclusively breastfed until the age of 6 months, followed by continued breastfeeding with complementary foods for up to 2 years, or longer.

The WHO European Office for the Prevention and Control of Noncommunicable Diseases has developed a model law on effective regulatory frameworks for ending the inappropriate marketing of breast-milk substitutes for infants and young children in the EU.

Analysing professionals' perceptions of processed foods

Acknowledging the need for interdisciplinary dialogue between stakeholders, and following the Processed Foods Symposium in 2020, the European Food Information Council (EUFIC) hosted a Stakeholder Workshop on Processed Foods in February 2021. Teresa Rodrigues from EFAD European Specialist Dietetic Network (ESDN) Public Health participated, along with 26 other stakeholders from the fields of nutrition, food technology, policy making, industry and civil society.

This workshop was conceived as a research study, which was published in the peer-reviewed scientific journal Frontiers in Nutrition “Even we are confused”: A thematic analysis of professionals' perceptions of processed foods and challenges for communication”.

EUFIC has now published a press release highlighting the need for greater interdisciplinary collaboration to seek consensus on the scope of processing, the degree of processing, and the aspects used to assess the wholesomeness of processed food.

Cannabidiol novel food evaluations on hold pending new data

European Food Safety Authority scientists cannot currently establish the safety of cannabidiol (CBD) as a novel food due to data gaps and uncertainties about potential hazards related to CBD intake.

The European Commission has determined that cannabidiol (CBD) can be considered as a novel food (NF), and currently, 19 applications are under assessment at EFSA. While assessing these, it has become clear that there are knowledge gaps that need to be addressed before a conclusion on the safety of CBD can be reached.
