EFAD's General Meeting takes place in October

For the first time since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, delegates of our member National Dietetic Associations, Higher Education Institutes Committees and Specialist Networks will be meeting in person to shape commitment and action to improve nutritional health and sustainable diets in Europe.

This year’s annual meeting is extensive with workshops for our member delegates. Next year, in October, we will organize our EFAD Congress again for all Dietitians.

European Forum for Primary Care receives industry-renowned award 

European Forum for Primary Care (EFPC), which EFAD is proud to be a member of, has won the UN Interagency Task Force & the WHO Special Programme on Primary Health Care Award. This acolade acknowledges EFPC as an exemplary platform for primary healthcare professionals to collaborate and jointly strengthen action across Europe, including advocating for ever stronger, fairer and equitable primary care.

Save the date - European Parliament lunch debate on Diabetes

On 12 October International Diabetes Federation Europe, alongside all diabetes stakeholders, and MEPs Mobilising for Diabetes will be running a lunchtime debate at the European Parliament in Brussels, hosted by MEP István Ujhelyi. He has been a long-standing supporter of the diabetes cause and a strong ally of the diabetes community.

During the event, diabetes advocates will share real-life stories of living with diabetes and reflect on the urgent need for a new diabetes resolution in 2022 to improve diabetes care and build resilient and sustainable health systems.

EUFIC: How to reduce food waste at home

Around 88 million tonnes of food is wasted in the EU every year, with more than half coming from households. But we can all take action by changing the way we shop, cook, and plan our meals to avoid wasting food, money, and resources.

Here's some top tips from EUFIC:

  2. Know how to store your food
  3. Understand ‘use by’ vs ‘best before’ dates
  4. Use what you have
  5. Avoid serving too much
  6. Know your moulds
  7. Share extra food with others
  8. Repurpose waste where possible

EU Health Policy Platform Stakeholder Network produces report

 

The EU Health Policy Platform Stakeholder Network on ‘Profiling and Training the Healthcare Workforce of the Future’ report was launched on 22 September in the European Parliament and EFAD endorsed the report.

The report on ‘Essential skills for a resilient and effective European health workforce’ tackles the question of what essential skills the European health workforce needs to have in coping with 21st Century challenges such as demographic change, the increasing number of chronic and non-communicable diseases or the digital and green transitions.

The EU Commissioner for Health and Food Safety, Stella Kyriakides, gave a statement regarding the Farm to Fork Strategy on the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste.

Action is needed to support the gap in health and care workforce in the European region

All countries of the WHO European Region encompassing 53 Member States across Europe and central Asia currently face severe challenges related to the health and care workforce, according to a new report released by WHO/Europe. An ageing workforce is chief among them.

The analysis finds that 13 of the 44 countries that reported data on this issue have a workforce in which 40% of medical doctors are already aged 55 years or older.
