The latest from EFAD

The new-look EFAD is here

We proudly present EFAD’s new logo which perfectly fits our aim and ambitions for the coming years.

As EFAD is widely known as the umbrella organization for the National Dietetic Associations across Europe we wanted to have a recognizable new logo, but also one which would allow us to communicate about our sub-brands with visual consistency. We stayed with the blue base, but in a brighter way and with a strong typography.

The main graphic theme of our new visual identity is a triangle. It is a strong reference to the nutritional pyramid, which is close to the profession of a dietitian. Its structure perfectly reflects the scientific and formal nature of our organization. Graphically, it also introduces more possibilities in the materials.

EFAD’s ambitions are based on the construction that we:

  • Lead to impact health of European citizens
  • Build to support and serve our members
  • Connect to advocate and promote our profession

For these, three main message elements were created for the communication, expressed both in graphic format using key visuals and supplemented by text defining the main message.

From now on we will use the new logo and branding on our new materials. If you use the EFAD logo, please replace it with the new one. For the logo or questions on this, you can send us an email to Esta dirección de correo electrónico está siendo protegida contra los robots de spam. Our new website will be launched in the first part of the new year.

EFAD adopts Sustainable Dietary Patterns position

A healthier and greener Europe is necessary and the transition to more sustainable food systems are therefore essential. European dietitians are key agents to facilitate this transition.

European dietetic associations and the European dietitian workforce are committed and willing to promote healthier and more sustainable dietary patterns through affordable diets that are diversified, nutritious, less resource-intensive, and produce minimal waste.

An interdisciplinary approach is needed to successfully integrate more sustainable healthy diets into a complex system of food production and supply. We call upon our partners to work together with us to achieve that goal.

The time is now, and European dietitians are ready.

Read our Position Paper, which was developed as part of the EFAD Learning Sustainable Dietary Patterns Program.

First Dutch Professor of Dietetics gives inaugural address

On November 11, 2021 Marian de van der Schueren officially accepted her appointment as the first Professor of Dietetics in the Netherlands, by delivering her inaugural address entitled: The proof of the pudding is in the eating.

In her inaugural address, Marian emphasized that dietetics can make a huge difference for health, at an individual level, and at a societal level. More scientific research is necessary to (also) convince other professionals and policy makers of the true worth of dietetics.

Only a few decades ago, dietitians were working in kitchens and gave dietary advice as prescribed by medical doctors. Nowadays dietitians are full members of multidisciplinary treatment teams. Although many ‘outsiders’ see dietitians as professionals writing meal programmes or helping you to lose weight, dietitians are versatile professionals, taking into account medical and metabolic disturbances, psychosocial circumstances, health bevioural aspects and personal circumstances when giving dietary advice. They are highly educated and have more to bring than other nutrition professionals who have (mostly) only been trained in giving dietary prescriptions. The moment to draw attention to the value of dietetics is now, with healthy lifestyle gaining a lot of attention (due to COVID, to prevent disease or to recover from disease).

Dietetic research, if taking place, is usually undertaken in the academic setting. However, the majority of our patients are treated at home. Therefore, Marian aims to introduce dietetic research among dietetians working in the community as well. This may require a different way of working, with standardized data to measure, and fixed consultation moments. But in the end it is expected that data can be used to boost the dietetic profession, by showing its worth, success and effectiveness.

Marian was the recipient of the EFAD 2019 Fellowship.

New campaign raises awareness of the importance of combining physical activity and nutrition

The General Council of Official Associations of Dietitians-Nutritionists and the General Council of Physical and Sports Education have launched a campaign, "Stay fit, always with health".

The aim is to raise awareness about the importance of combining physical activity with adequate nutrition to enjoy good health, as well as eliminate hoaxes and bad practices in the field of sports nutrition.

Through the website and the social networks of the CGCODN and the COLEF Council, recommendations on sports nutrition prepared by dietitians and nutritionists specialized in sports nutrition and physical or sports educators will be shared over the next four weeks.

Materials will also be provided to specialists in both professions so that they can be used in their daily work with their patients.

The European Food Safety Authority is inviting dietitians and nutritionists to help finalise scientific advice that will support decision-makers develop a future EU-wide system for front-of-pack nutrition labelling. The advice will also inform conditions for restricting nutrition and health claims on foods.

The public consultation runs until 9 January 2022. To see the draft opinion and take part in the public consultation, click here.
