The international declaration on the human right to nutritional care: A global commitment to recognize nutritional care as a human right

The International Declaration on the Human Right to Nutritional Care, which unites efforts by launching a global call to action against disease-related malnutrition, was signed in the city of Vienna during the 44th ESPEN Congress on September 5th 2022.

In the paper "The International Declaration on the Human Right to Nutritional Care: A Global Commitment to recognize nutritional care as a human right", published in Clinical Nutrition, the general background of the Vienna Declaration is presented, along with the EFAD Budapest Resolution.

The Budapest Resolution was issued at the EFAD annual General Meeting in Budapest last October, and stresses that everyone has the right to adequate food and to be free from hunger, in line with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and supports the International Declaration on the Human Right to Nutritional Care. The Resolution strongly recommends that dietetic care should be an integral part of nutritional care so that no one is left out.

Nutrition care is an integral part of patient‑centred medical care:
a European consensus

In 2021, the EFADENHA, and ESPEN won the vote to lead one of the three 2022 "Thematic Networks" of the European Union’s Health Policy Platform (HPP), on integrated nutrition cancer care.

The Thematic Network was then led by a consortium of more than 10 European-level organisations that co-signed the Joint Statement presented on May 5th, 2022, at the European Health Policy Platform annual event.

As a follow-up action, the paper Nutrition care is an integral part of patient-centred medical care: a European Consensus, published recently in Medical Oncology, draws clear links and suggests the next steps needed, championing and demanding integration of nutrition care into cancer care.

EFAD's ESDN Oncology Lead Nicole Erickson is one of the first joint authors.

Statement by Commissioner Kyriakides on World Health Day

Commissioner for Health and Food Safety Stella Kyriakides marked World Health Day on 7 April with the following statement:

"Three years into the COVID-19 pandemic, we have seen the weaknesses in our healthcare systems and how the world was simply not prepared to face a crisis of this magnitude. These challenges have been exacerbated by the Russian invasion in Ukraine, which highlighted even further the crucial role of well-functioning health systems.

We have been laying the foundations for a strong European Health Union that will not only reinforce the EU's common preparedness to tackle emerging health threats, but also allow us to help build the strong, resilient and sustainable health systems of tomorrow that will ensure better care for patients every day.

Ensuring accessible, affordable and high-quality medicines is a top priority for the year ahead. Our reform of the EU pharmaceutical legislation will address this crucial issue by improving access to innovative and affordable medicines for patients, enhancing security of supply to reduce the risk of medicines shortages, and support a globally leading and innovative EU pharmaceutical industry.
