Disharmony in gut microbiota – should this be a priority for public health nutrition?

This narrative review highlights the most important recent advances linking high fat diet-driven dysbiosis and high fat diet-related inflammation, presents the pathomechanisms for these phenomena, and examines the possible causative relationship between pro-inflammatory status and gut microbiota changes.

An update on what the Professional Practice Committee (PPC) has been working on.

So far this year

• In April, PPC Chair Jose Tiebie (the Netherlands) gave a presentation at the University of the Balearic Islands about the differences and similarities between the Nutrition Care Process (NCP) which is used in 26 countries worldwide vs the Dietetic Care Process (DCP) which is used in four countries (Germany, Austria, Belgium and the Netherlands). The terminology of the two different systems has been discussed.
• We welcomed two new members, Vivian Detopoulou (Greece) and Carla Mihail (Romania).
• In June the Code of Ethics was rewritten by Silvia Kurmann (Switzerland) and Naomi Trostler (Israel) and approved by EFAD.

Upcoming projects

• Ana Catharina Moreira (Portugal) and Vivian Detopoulou are working on an update of the Dashboard of Registration together with the Education and Lifelong Learning Committee Chair Fiona McCullough. They will give a workshop at the 33rd EFAD General Meeting on 22 October. 
• In October we will hold a webinar on a case of a patient with diabetes, in the NCP and DCP processes and their standardized languages. The case study will be presented by Sandra Jent (Switzerland) and Sytske Runia (the Netherlands).
• Naomi Trostler and Jose Tiebie will update the PPC's mission and vision paper at the end of the year.
• The PPC has been working on translating the INIS Study by four European countries: Austria, Germany, Netherlands and Belgium. The INIS study itself starts in 2023 under the supervision of Elin Lovestom. Silvia Kurmann and Jose Tiebie met with the four countries in March 2022.

British Dietetic Association (BDA)'s Dietitians Week celebrates #WhatDietitiansDo

The BDA encouraged Dietitians to talk about their role, what they do and how they make a difference to their patients and clients during last week's annual Dietitians Week. More than 5,000 tweets were posted from almost 1,700 contributors across the week, celebrating the impact and value Dietitians have.

Become a certified cancer prevention promoter

Cancer Prevention Europe’s (CPE) Learning Centre provides learning modules to build capacity and support knowledge transfer on cancer prevention. The first CPE multilingual online programme on primary and secondary cancer prevention has now been launched. It is aimed at cancer prevention promoters and advocates.

The programme consists of two sets of free, self-paced, e-learning modules:

1. The European Code Against Cancer (ECAC) 4th edition - 13 certified modules about the messages within the ECAC and the methodology underlying the ECAC.
2. Latest evidence, myths & controversies - 12 modules presenting new evidence emerged since the publication of the ECAC and busting myths related to the topics addressed by the 4th edition of the ECAC.

EU-funded project aimed at millennials highlights benefits of fruit and vegetables

The Life is Better with Fruit and Vegetables campaign is an EU-funded programme that targets millennials and aims to increase their level of knowledge regarding the nutritional benefits, versatility, sustainability, and practicality of fruit and vegetables. Young Europeans aged 25 to 35 represent a key demographics of consumers, as they are still shaping their purchasing and eating habits.

WHO Europe publishes report on minimum pricing for alcohol

The WHO European Region has some of the highest levels of alcohol consumption and corresponding rates of alcohol-related harm in the world. Pricing policies and taxation are among the most effective measures that policy-makers can use to address these harms, but they remain underutilized across the Region. 

There has been growing interest in recent years in a relatively new form of pricing policy to decrease alcohol affordability and consequently consumption – minimum pricing. This report discusses this (as yet) not widely used policy and its potential for improving public health and examines how minimum pricing policies should be applied alongside alcohol taxation measures.
