Prize draw: Coffee consumption survey


EFAD is currently running a survey about Coffee and Health. The aim of this survey is to gather the views of dietitians on recommending coffee as part of a balanced diet, their knowledge about the health benefits of coffee as well as the consumption pattern of coffee observed in their patients. It's available in six languages (English, Dutch, French, Spanish, Italian and German).
 
At the end of the survey, you will be able to choose if you want to participate in a prize competition to win €500, to use for the 14th EFAD Conference 2023 (fees + travel expenses).

EFAD calls for nominations


EFAD is calling for nominations for enthusiastic colleagues who wish to contribute to the work of the various specialist dietetic networks committees from 2022 to 2026. The deadline is Friday 30 September 2022.

Food-based dietary management of Crohn’s Disease: are we there yet?


Diet is a key modifier of risk of inflammatory bowel disease development and potentially a treatment option in patients with established disease. International organisations in gastroenterology and inflammatory bowel disease have published guidelines for the role of diet in disease onset and its management.

ESDN Gastroenterology Spotlight

An update on what the European Specialist Dietetic Network (ESDN) for Gastroenterology has been working on.

Projects and publications:

  • April issue of Kompass Nutrition & Dietetics ( Komp Nutr Diet 2022;2:1–2) Diet and Gut Microbiome /edited by Christina Katsagoni 
  • Working in collaboration with the Education Hub of Gut Microbiota for the production of online courses, ppts, and infographics related to gut microbiota 
  • During Autumn/Winter there will be two webinars.1st seminar: “Dietary guidelines in IB and 2nd Seminar: “Celiac disease and Gluten intolerance”
  • Working in collaboration with ESPEN in order to update existing guidelines for cystic fibrosis 
  • Working closely with the ESDN older adults group to promote GLIM criteria for malnutrition

Get involved with Sustainable September


Sustainable September is a campaign run by the British Dietetic Association (BDA). The initiative aims to show why dietitians are best placed to lead the way in sustainable diets and eating and this year focuses on small steps to eat more sustainably.

Breastfeeding and onset of cancer


The beginning of August was World Breastfeeding Week. It reminded women that breastfeeding their babies for prolonged periods lowers their risk of developing breast cancer in later life than comparable women who do not breastfeed.

WHO Europe: Foods for infants and young children - a matter of concern?


World Breastfeeding Week also sparks discussions across the WHO European Region around the growing international concern about infant feeding. Many commercial food products are marketed as suitable for babies from 4 months of age, potentially displacing breast milk intake. WHO recommends that babies are exclusively breastfed until the age of 6 months, followed by continued breastfeeding with complementary foods for up to 2 years, or longer.

The WHO European Office for the Prevention and Control of Noncommunicable Diseases has developed a model law on effective regulatory frameworks for ending the inappropriate marketing of breast-milk substitutes for infants and young children in the EU.

WHO Europe's Obesity Report indicates obesity is rising but change is possible


WHO Europe's new Obesity Report indicates that almost 60% of adults in Europe and one in three children are overweight or have obesity.

Sustainable eating is healthy for us, but also for the planet!


Reinforcing the resilience and sustainability of our food systems is a top priority for the EU, as set out in the EU Farm to Fork Strategy.

It is an approach to producing food in a way that is economically fair, supports people's health and wellbeing, and does not harm the environment and it's also an important part of wider EU efforts to reach the net-zero emissions target, or climate neutrality, by 2050.

Updates to Nourishing and Moving databases


This month two full country datasets were added to both the Nourishing and Moving databases. Nutrition policies in Malta and Greece were added to the Nourishing database and implemented policies promoting physical activity in Austria and Belgium were added to the Moving policy database.

There are now 21 full country datasets on implemented nutrition policies in the Nourishing database and physical activity policies in the Moving database.

EU video highlights benefits of European vegetables


The EU's Audiovisual Service has produced several videos promoting good food from the EU. Videos in the series include ones on vegetables, olive oil and cheese.

Global week for non-communicable diseases


5–11 September 2022 is the Global Week for Action on Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs).

The week for action aims to unite the NCD movement each year under a specific theme, with the aim of reducing the NCD burden globally and increasing health and equality. Join the movement today!

This year is all about prioritising the urgent need for increased NCD financing to prevent and treat NCDs and build resilient health systems that leave no one behind.

Call for proposals: 2022 Thematic Networks - EU Health Policy Platform

The European Commission invites health stakeholders to submit proposals for a new cycle of Thematic Networks, organised under the framework of the EU Health Policy Platform.

This year’s public health areas include continuity of care and quality of life for people with a range of diseases, reducing health inequalities and mental health. Submit your theme by 31 August.

Fighting food waste in the EU: call for proposals to help stakeholders take action


Fighting against food waste is one of the key action strands laid down in the EU's Farm to Fork Strategy, which aims to make food systems fair, healthy and environmentally friendly.

In order to support key players in taking action to address food waste, the European Commission in collaboration with European Health and Digital Executive Agency (HaDEA)  has launched a new call for proposals under the Single Market Programme – Food strand: ‘Grants for stakeholders to improve measurement of food waste and help implement food waste prevention in their operations and organisations’.

The lack of universally-recognised diagnostic criteria for sarcopenic obesity (SO) clearly hampers patient identification, reliable assessment of SO prevalence, as well as the assessment of SO-related outcomes.
