Integrated Nutrition Cancer Care: Informing Policymakers for Better Health Outcomes

The EU4Nutrition stakeholder group, which EFAD is a partner of, published its policy brief "Nutrition care is an integral part of patient-centred medical care: a European consensus" which will be actively brought to the attention of health policymakers across Europe, ensuring that its important findings and recommendations reach key decision-makers in the field.

Deriving from the Thematic Network “Integrated Nutrition Cancer Care”, an initiative of the European Commission to promote discussions about public health issues, the group recently published the scientific article Nutrition care is an integral part of patient-centred medical care: a European consensus, that stresses the need to listen to patient voices with regards to nutrition and formulate actions to secure integrated nutrition care to all patients with cancer.

🎓 Congratulations, Dr. Harriët Jager-Wittenaar!

We are thrilled to announce that Dr Harriët Jager-Wittenaar will be named as Professor by special appointment of Dietetics and transmural nutritional care at Radboud University Medical Centre / Radboud University, starting from September 1, 2023. Dr Jager-Wittenaar's research focuses on the prevention and treatment of malnutrition in the ill and older adults, addressing a critical area in healthcare.

Dr Harriët Jager-Wittenaar, the former Lead of ESDN Older Adults, has played a pivotal role in advancing the field of dietetics and nutrition. She co-created and led the EFAD-ESPEN Working Group, where she continues to be an active member. 

We applaud Dr Harriët Jager-Wittenaar on this well-deserved honour and look forward to witnessing the transformative impact of her research and teaching. Congratulations once again on this remarkable achievement!

🔥 Europe faces record temperatures as Cerberus heatwave hits. Southern and Eastern Europe are bracing for record-breaking temperatures as a searing heatwave sets in.

As temperatures soar, it's crucial to keep our bodies hydrated and cool. Hydration plays a vital role in maintaining overall health, especially during hot weather. INPRO closing seminar (30/11) and field visit (01/12)

The INPRO consortium will share the outcomes of 3 years of collaboration and research during a 2-day INPRO event.
Together partners of 4 universities of applied sciences and 3 rehabilitation centres worked towards the goal of further enabling a smooth transfer from interprofessional education to the work field.

ENDietS Students' Day is a remarkable event created by students, for students, with the aim of providing them a platform to express their voices and opinions. This event serves as a unique opportunity for students in the field of dietetics and nutrition to come together, share their experiences, and contribute to the ongoing conversation in their respective fields.
If you are a BSc, MSc or PhD student in nutrition and dietetics, you can then be part of this extraordinary event by showcasing your research findings "Pitch Your Science" and valuable experiences "Share Your Experience"  with your peers.

Ensuring Food Security for Cancer Patients may Improve Cancer Outcomes

Food insecurity is prevalent among low-income immigrant and minority patients with cancer. To our knowledge, this randomized controlled trial is the first to prospectively examine the impact on cancer outcomes of food insecurity interventions, with the goal of informing evidence-based interventions to address food insecurity in patients with cancer.

Scientific Opinion "Towards sustainable food consumption"

The EU Scientific Advice Mechanism (SAM) released the scientific opinion with policy recommendations of the Group of Chief Scientific Advisors to the European Commission on sustainable food consumption.

This opinion was informed by an evidence review report provided by a working group of top European scientists established by SAPEA and stresses that EU policymakers should consider ways to unburden the consumer and make sustainable, healthy food an easy and affordable choice. That will require a mix of incentives, information, and binding policies governing all aspects of food production and distribution

WHO guideline: Policies to protect children from the harmful impact of food marketing

Children continue to be exposed to powerful food marketing, which predominantly promotes foods high in saturated fatty acids, trans-fatty acids, free sugars and/or sodium and uses a wide variety of marketing strategies that are likely to appeal to children. Food marketing has a harmful impact on children’s food choices and their dietary intake.

This WHO guideline provides Member States with recommendations and implementation considerations on policies to protect children from the harmful impact of food marketing, based on evidence specific to children and to the context of food marketing.

EFSA: Glyphosate - no critical areas of concern; data gaps identified

EFSA adopted its conclusions of the peer review of glyphosate and shared them with the European Commission and Member States, to inform the decision they will take about whether to keep glyphosate on the EU list of approved pesticide active substances.
