From the Journal

Article spotlight: "Age and Frailty as Key Determinants for Nutritional Therapy Individualization in Elderly Adults with Diabetes"

Globally, the prevalence of diseases and disabilities associated with older age such as diabetes, heart disease, and cognitive decline along with sarcopenia and frailty is on the rise, posing an increasing burden on global health.

These non-communicable diseases which accompany the aging process are often interrelated and share common pathophysiological backgrounds and in some cases common therapeutic interventions.

The next issue of the Journal, published in Autumn 2021, will cover e-health and we are looking for case reports on this theme.

If you have a case report or good example of dietitians using e-health or mobile health, preferably within the last one-and-a-half years, please get in touch. If the original is not in English, Karger will translate it and - if needed - clarify the licence.

The deadline for inclusions is 1 October. Please send case reports to Christine Schiller (Esta dirección de correo electrónico está siendo protegida contra los robots de spam. Necesita tener JavaScript habilitado para poder verlo.). Thank you!

Protecting the nutritional status of patients with cancer: a call to action

To influence EU programmes and to support national initiatives, the European Nutrition for Health Alliance and its partners have developed a joint call to action with 7 actionable recommendations designed to ensure the protection of nutritional status in cancer in national health policies.

At a Joint Policy Seminar earlier this month, experts from the European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism, European Cancer Patient Coalition, European Cancer Organisation and EFAD stressed the vital importance of nutrition for treatment and quality of life of patients with cancer.

Nicole Erickson, member of the EFAD oncology expert advisory board, highlighted the fact that many patients with serious nutritional problems do not have access to dietetic advice and "therefore multidisciplinary teams should include a specialised oncology dietitian."

A joint call to action - with seven actionable recommendations - was launched, designed to ensure the protection of the nutritional status of patients with cancer across Europe. The recommendations can be used as a template for local activities and are available for download.
