10 December - Human Rights Day

Human Rights Day, celebrated annually on December 10th, serves as a reminder of the importance of upholding fundamental human rights worldwide. This occasion prompts reflection on the EFAD Budapest Resolution that stresses that everyone has the right to adequate food and to be free from hunger, in line with the International Declaration on the Human Right to Food.

The Budapest Resolution strongly recommends that dietetic care should be an integral part of nutritional care to ensure that no one is left behind.

Access to an optimal diet helps prevent and reduce the risk of certain diseases, and the length of hospital stay, improves the effectiveness of clinical treatment and the quality of life, and also results in reduced healthcare costs. At the same time, food insecurity is associated with depression, reduced productivity, and increased healthcare costs, which can place a socioeconomic disproportionate burden.

For a healthier population, all European citizens must have access to nutritional care. EFAD is fully committed to improving nutritional health, promoting sustainable diets and reducing health inequalities across Europe.

Kompass Nutrition & Dietetics - Issue focused on Nutrition and Older Adults

The Importance of Foodservice to Combat Food Insecurity and Malnutrition in Older People

In recent years, Meals on Wheels (MoW) services have been in a state of decline as austerity policies have become entrenched. However, this decline is occurring with little knowledge of the impact withdrawal of MoW services has on the health and well-being of those who use them. This paper presents findings of a mixed methods ethnographic study drawing on qualitative interviews and visual methods underpinned by social practice theory to explore the household food practices of older people receiving MoW services.

Ultra-processed foods linked to increased cancer risk, diabetes, and heart disease

A groundbreaking study has found that the higher the consumption of ultra-processed foods, the higher the risk of suffering from a combination of chronic diseases including cancer, diabetes and heart disease – known as multimorbidity.

The researchers discovered that the more ultra-processed foods consumed, the greater the risk of suffering from 2 or more long-term health conditions, such as cancer, diabetes and heart disease. Specifically, associations were noted with animal-based products and artificially sweetened beverages (eg soft drinks).

The multinational study involved 266,666 men and women from 7 European countries, and the University of Vienna, in collaboration with the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC-WHO).
